Microplastics and Phytoplankon, 2022-23.
In 2022, I realised there were environmental problems in production, use and disposal of the acrylic medium, and after researching microplastics and how they have spread throughout the natural world, including our bodies I decided to explore and experiment to create more experiential work. My environmental anxieties are at essence of my practice. I am an autistic individual who continuously worries about the future of humanity, as a mother these fears are emphasised.
.
When I think about our individual impact on the world, every other person, and everything else living on it. I become overwhelmed. I think a lot of other people do .
.
As a part of my Ba fine art degree, I created this work back in 2022, whilst completing a module exploring materiality. How to use the right materials to emphasis the meaning behind your work can be very powerful.
.
My inspiration for this drawing was from a photographer David Liittschwager who created micro photographic images, to show microplastics amongst living organisms off the coast of Hawaii, whilst taking samples of the great Pacific garbage patch, whilst working with scientists in 2019.
.
I drew this image from a section of his micro photography making the microscopic, large and visible. Creating this work on single use post consumer packaging that is reflective and plastic is to emphasis the effect and meaning behind this artwork and the enormous problems we face by creating tonnes of plastic waste everyday.
.
“Plastic is an amazing material, but the idea of making something single use is preposterous.” – David Liittschwager, 2019.
.
“We will not recycle our way out of the plastic pollution crisis: we need a systemic transformation to achieve the transition to a circular economy” – Inger Anderson, UNEnvironment Programme Executive Director, 2022.

Hello there! I’m Emily, welcome to my world.
I am a visual artist living in the county of Somerset, England in the United Kingdom. I began my journey as an artist from 2017 to 2022 utilising acrylic paint for its ability to create sculptural impasto effects. My focus was then on patterns found in naturally occurring spaces, spaces that I walked and observed which bought me harmony and tranquillity whenever my mind was challenging me, with repetitive negative thoughts.
On a personal note: I love science fiction (yes! the “Hello there!” was a Obi wan Kenobi quote) and reading non-fiction. I am currently learning to play the guitar and read music, after not doing so for 15 years. My obsessions are thinking about, experimenting, making, and looking at visual art, learning about physics and the visual arts, each field of knowledge and their philosophies. #weavingart #neurodivergentartist #waysofseeing #seeingtheworld #interdisciplinary #transdisciplinary #autisticartist #seeingthingsdifferently

Would you change the world? How would you change the world? Let me know. I’m including your answers on this artwork I’ve created for an exhibition in February. I can add your name if you wish – just add ‘please add my name’ to your response. Please share this post so I can get as many responses as possible. I would really appreciate your help and thoughts. Happy Friday! Love Emily.
